Rail Cybersecurity Foundations
(1-Day)

virtual classroom
[24.04.26 ‣ 9am-5pm (CET)]

Overview

Rail Cybersecurity Foundations is a focused one-day training course designed to establish a shared language between railway engineering and cybersecurity.

The course provides a practical introduction to the fundamentals needed to understand why cybersecurity in rail projects differs from classic IT security, how railway systems and interfaces should be viewed from a cybersecurity perspective, and how engineering, lifecycle, and assurance thinking come together in real projects.

Participants gain a structured foundation for understanding railway system domains, assets, interfaces, trust boundaries, operational constraints, and the role of cybersecurity across the rail lifecycle. The course also provides practical orientation on how cybersecurity connects to documentation, testing, acceptance, and stakeholder interaction in project environments.

A German-language delivery of this course is also available. German version available here: CLICK HERE.

Why should you attend?

Rail cybersecurity is no longer a niche topic or a purely regulatory exercise. It has become an integral part of system design, assurance, testing, and acceptance. At the same time, many professionals involved in rail projects still face uncertainty when cybersecurity discussions begin: terminology is inconsistent, interfaces between disciplines are unclear, and expectations from customers, suppliers, and assessors are often difficult to interpret.

This course is designed to provide a practical and accessible foundation for understanding cybersecurity in railway environments. It explains why rail systems require a different perspective than standard enterprise IT, how lifecycle and safety considerations influence cybersecurity engineering, and what participants need to understand in order to contribute effectively in real projects.

The focus is on practical understanding and engineering logic rather than abstract compliance language. The objective is to provide participants with confidence, orientation, and a solid basis for deeper work in TS 50701-related projects.

WHO CAN ATTEND?

  • Railway engineers who want a clearer understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals in project and system contexts
  • Cybersecurity professionals who need to understand railway system structure, lifecycle, and operational constraints
  • Project managers, technical managers, and system leads who need a shared language across engineering and cybersecurity disciplines
  • Assessors, consultants, and specialists who require a practical introduction to cybersecurity in railway environments
  • Professionals from operators, manufacturers, integrators, and suppliers who are entering rail cybersecurity topics for the first time or want a structured refresher

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand why railway cybersecurity differs from generic IT security

  • Explain the basic structure of railway system domains, interfaces, and lifecycle phases relevant to cybersecurity

  • Identify assets, trust boundaries, and critical functions in a railway system context

  • Understand how cybersecurity connects to documentation, testing, acceptance, and project delivery

  • Communicate more effectively with engineering, cybersecurity, and project stakeholders

  • Build a stronger foundation for later work in governance, risk assessment, security requirements, and assurance

Course Agenda

The course is structured around seven core building blocks:

  • Why Rail Cybersecurity Is Different
Rail constraints, typical failure patterns, and common project hotspots

  • Rail Architectures & Interfaces
    Domains, interfaces, and lifecycle gates

  • Rail Cybersecurity Standards
    EN 50159, IEC 62443, and TS 50701

  • Cybersecurity Fundamentals in Rail
Threats, risks, and the safety-security link

  • Cybersecurity Engineering Logic & Governance
    Traceability, trade-offs, and ownership

  • System Workshop: Assets & Boundaries
Assets, interfaces, boundaries, and critical functions

  • Intro to Rail Cybersecurity Assurance
    Verification, evidence, acceptance, and proof

Each block combines practical explanation with project-oriented discussion to help participants build a structured foundation for railway cybersecurity work.

FORMAT OF THIS COURSE

  • 1-day live virtual classroom
  • Instructor-led delivery

  • Interactive discussions and Q&A

  • Practical examples and realistic railway project context

  • Includes workshop-based learning and guided discussion

  • Language: English

Also available as a full 5-day program

Rail Cybersecurity Foundations (1 Day) can be attended independently, but it is also part of our broader Rail Cybersecurity Engineering – Professional Program.

The full 5-day program covers the complete workflow across the rail cybersecurity lifecycle – from foundations and governance to risk assessment, security requirements, assurance, testing, and acceptance-ready evidence.
